Summary

New York has not joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, so there is no expedited pathway for out-of-state physicians to become licensed in New York. Clinicians must hold a full New York license to treat patients located in the state.

New York is one of the few states that has not enacted the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which provides expedited multistate licensure for physicians. Because New York is outside the compact, out-of-state physicians must pursue traditional New York licensure to provide telehealth to patients located in New York, and New York patients temporarily out of state may be unable to see their usual provider unless that provider is licensed where the patient is. This raises barriers to cross-state telehealth and continuity of care.
