Summary

New Mexico enacted the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in February 2026, but the medical board is still writing rules and the expedited multistate pathway is not expected to launch until late 2026 or early 2027. Until then, out-of-state physicians must obtain full New Mexico licensure the traditional way.

New Mexico passed legislation to join the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in February 2026, but the Medical Board is still promulgating rules, with an anticipated launch of December 2026 or January 2027. Until the compact is operational, there is no expedited cross-state pathway, so physicians licensed elsewhere must complete New Mexico's standard licensure before delivering telehealth or in-person care. This delays access for patients seeking out-of-state specialists.
