New Jersey allows audio-only physical health telehealth to be reimbursed at only 50% of in-person rates
Summary
Under New Jersey's telehealth parity rules, audio-only physical health services are exempt from full payment parity and may be reimbursed at as little as 50% of the in-person rate. Audio-only visits for physical health care are therefore financially disadvantaged compared with in-person or video visits.
New Jersey's telehealth payment parity policy carves out audio-only physical health services, which may be reimbursed at a minimum of 50% of the in-person rate rather than full parity (behavioral health audio-only retains full parity). This audio-only payment gap can discourage phone-based physical health visits and disadvantages patients who lack video access. The temporary nature of the parity provision also creates ongoing reimbursement uncertainty.
