Summary

Massachusetts has not joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, so out-of-state physicians cannot use the compact's expedited pathway to get licensed in Massachusetts. They must instead apply through the standard, slower state process.

Unlike most states, Massachusetts does not participate in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which lets eligible physicians obtain additional state licenses in days to weeks rather than months. This is a cross-state licensing barrier that slows telehealth and locum coverage for out-of-state physicians wanting to treat Massachusetts patients. Enabling legislation (H.2393) advanced in committee in October 2025 but had not been enacted.
