Iowa generally requires an in-person interview/exam or established relationship before telehealth treatment
Summary
Iowa rules generally require physicians to conduct an in-person medical interview and physical examination, or otherwise establish a provider-patient relationship, before treating via telehealth. Exceptions exist for emergencies, institutional settings, and consultations.
Iowa medical board rules generally require an in-person medical interview and physical examination, or an otherwise established provider-patient relationship, before delivering care via telehealth, unless the technology is sufficient to establish a diagnosis. Limited exceptions apply for institutional settings, emergencies, and consultations. This can delay or block direct-to-consumer and first-visit telehealth for Iowa patients, particularly in rural areas where in-person access is limited.
